![]() I have started with Version 1 or earlier of Affinity Photo, Designer, and now Publisher and so far I feel I have been well rewarded for being an early adopter. Then Affinity came along and I climbed on their bandwagon early. I would have gladly used InDesign but it was too pricey for my budget and/or needs and then then Adobe went to the software rental business model and I simply could not justify the annual cost. I have also explored some open source/freeeware apps, but their learning curve was steep and their documentation either too scanty or targeted toward knowledgeable pros using Windows so like the App Store products they ended up in the trash folder. (It is amazing what you can force fit if you use a big enough hammer 😠) At least you aren't saddled with having to shovel your way through and use a bunch of glitzy templates that are the stock in trade of so many desktop publishing apps. Like MS Word it is ill suited to text layout/desktop publishing but if you know it well enough it can produce acceptable, but not great results. I found I could get closer to what I wanted with NeoOffice. Adequate for home or perhaps very small business maybe, but not worth my effort to produce the caliber of output I wanted. I have tried several App Store offerings including iStudio and Swift Publisher and found them in some ways superior to Pages. Both free, though I have no problem paying for good software. Is there anything else you have used for text layout, whether small time or big time program? I thought about taking a look at Scribus or some version of Latex. My hope is Affinity will turn its talents to developing a viable competitor to Adobe Dreamweaver next. I suspect for someone coming from Adobe the re-learning curve may not be as steep, bit it is likely filled with pitfalls due to assumptions/expectations based on prior experience. There is also a very active and lively Affinity user community. They also offer comprehensive training Workbooks for Designer and Photo and a Publisher workbook is also promised. Like all very powerful software products there is a significant learning curve but Affinity offers several well done video tutorials. I have zero experience with the Quark product(s) so I cannot comment there. I am more of a dabbler than power user (much less guru) and it has been a long time since I used InDesign, but from my limited experience I believe Affinity Publisher is a viable competitor with Adobe InDesign. In most case the current Affinity product release accomplishes the same end result but via a different command or menu or series of steps. The biggest complaint I have seen about any of them has been "why doesn't it support the pick your command like Adobe?" or "Why doesn't Publisher do XXX like InDesign. Although I am in no way a Publisher, or InDesign guru I can safely say none of the Affinity products are a knock off of anything from Adobe and does their magic their own way. ![]() I have been using the Affinity Publisher beta for several months now and I just installed the release version.

The card frequently represents a person utterly unwilling to move on because he is so mired in the past. The Five of Cups interpretation suggests that you could struggle to let go of things in history. It demonstrates that the issue is primarily a psychological one rather than a materialistic or financial one. You may have lost an opportunity based on the water that has actually leaked from the cups. This card seems to indicate that you are stuck in the past and feeling sorry for yourself rather than shifting to a more optimistic outlook. You feel disappointed since a condition hasn't exactly worked out the way you had hoped. The Five of Cups represents dissatisfaction and the emotions that arise when events don't turn out the way you had anticipated. The Five of Cups depicts a man standing above three knocked-over cups, signifying his regrets and shortcomings, while wearing a long black robe. Between him and a mansion or a castle in the distance, a strong river flows, signifying a flood of feelings. However, the person doesn't appear to realise that there are two standing cups since they are too preoccupied with grieving for the lost ones. There are five cups on the ground, but only two of them are still upright. The individual appears to be in despair as he covers his face. A person wearing a black robe is depicted on the card. ![]() This card represents grief and the difficult obstacles that result from that specific event. ![]() The Five of Cups is one of those Tarot cards whose visual instantly conjures up unfavourable feelings. To read and understand them was a challenge and an accomplishment… One thing that I always appreciated about Epic Fantasy was its exclusivity. ![]() The lexicon, the syntax, and the high-literary value of many of these works was something that most ‘kids’ didn’t quite get. “Our first love was what publishers label as Epic or High Fantasy… Despite the unusual nature of our desired reading, it came with a certain quality. Frank LeVoie talks about this in his article, “ Is YA the Death of Epic Fantasy?” For every Anne McCaffrey and Susan Cooper, there are dozens of K. Twilight is the obvious example here, but there are many others. It also bears remembering that for every wonderful YA book, there are literally hundreds of mediocre, or terrible works. I have learned that just because the majority of appear to be written by adults does not make them trustworthy. When grownups cannot tell the difference between beautifully written world building and fan fiction bound between paperback covers and slapped with a publisher’s logo, then who can? Worse yet, with the advent of online review boards, such as Amazon, terrible books are being recommended willy-nilly. Grown adults now gush about the events of Breaking Dawn as though they happened to a best friend. What bothers me perhaps the most about cheap YA fiction is that it is no longer being read exclusively by young adults. I recently reread one of Piers Anthony’s books and was horrified at the hackneyed phrases and the threadbare tropes. The first time I read a Xanthian novel, I laughed over it for days. ![]() Let’s face it, many of these have become so laughably worn out because they can be used with such beautiful effect when written well. However, to the young adult reader, many of the plot devices that an adult has seen ad nauseam are fresh and new. If I had a nickel for every time a mind-reading vampire informed me that he had to have me then and there due to my opaque frontal lobe activities…) I could probably have just put up this picture with no text at all and y’all would understand.Ĭurrently, the YA trend (thanks to Twilight and the plethora of vomit-inducing books that followed in its wake) seems to be that this protagonist is a human, but has some abnormal characteristic that renders him irresistible to some magical being, and they fall in love. This becomes even more trite if he discovers his magical powers/super-secret heritage right before or immediately upon puberty. This seems to be considered most believable if he has been orphaned, split from his family by a catastrophe, or abandoned by his caretakers. He can be the “Chosen One,”-the answer to some prophecy, come to save everyone from some great evil-a prince in disguise, or sometimes the unwitting mixed child of a human and a non-human (normal animal, mystical beast, or god). The most clichéd of these seems to be one of several variations on the idea that the protagonist is not what he/she appears to be. In current YA fantasy, especially, tropes seem to be worn to the bone. These were the pinnacle of young adult fiction. I fell in love with the male leads, or rewrote the story in my mind and superimposed my own characters on their worlds long before I was aware of fan fiction. The Hero and the Crown, Crown Duel & Court Duel, Half Magic, The Black Stallion, Redwall, Tom’s Midnight Garden-each of these had characters that seemed to leap off the page and into my imagination. Frequently, especially during the summer, the library system would flash a caution screen, “WARNING: THIS PATRON IS OVER THEIR LIMIT.” The librarians never said anything to us they just quietly clicked OK, and let us take out as many books as we wanted. We would spend hours pouring over the shelves, and then bike back home with backpacks bursting at the seams. ![]() Our local library was near enough that my siblings and I were allowed to bike there, once our mother deemed us responsible enough. After all, I remember reading many fantastic books as a child and preteen. While doing so, I have lamented several times about the eroding quality of YA literature. I’ve spent a lot of time recently reading, and occasionally reviewing, young adult fiction-mostly fantasy. ![]() This means that if you have any of these scanner models, you can be confident that this holder will perfectly fit and secure your valuable equipment. So I’m trying to cut down on podcast listening, and one of the big ways I’ve done that is by removing Overcast from my dock, where it used to have a prime position. But within the past year or so, I’ve realized that I spend so much time listening to other people on podcasts (I’m actually afraid to look at Screen Time stats) that I’ve stopped taking as much time to reflect on my own thoughts and make my own things. I love podcasts, especially because, like probably a lot of people, I view them as a medium that I can engage with to stay informed about topics that interest me while still being having my hands free to be productive in other ways (cooking, folding clothes, grocery shopping, those kinds of things). This is a tough one for me, and may sound odd, but even though I love using it, Overcast is the app that best fits this category for me. Personal Reading School Which app is your guilty pleasure?
